POG Conference

The Plant Oxygen Group (POG) Conference, supported by the Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR-Europe), is a great forum for discussion and for the effective exchange of information and ideas on every aspect regarding reactive oxygen and nitrogen species metabolism, action and signaling in plants. The Conference aims also to provide a dynamic interface between academic research and field applications, and represents an important opportunity for everyone in the field, especially promoting early career scientist participation.

The scientific program will include several oral communications by young promising scientists - selected from abstracts- next to lectures by top scientists, facilitating discussion among participants in a friendly and stimulating environment.

The Plant Oxygen Group (POG)

The Plant Oxygen Group (POG) was established in 1993 in the Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR-Europe). The main goal of POG is to provide a major interdisciplinary platform for cutting edge research in all aspects of free radical research in plants and to organize the POG conference every two/three years in order to facilitate information transfer and other essential interactions.

Redox Research in BIOP

Redox reactions are evolutionarily conserved signaling principles, occurring in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The most important redox molecules are reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. In plants, they have very important signaling functions and are involved in the regulation of transpiration, gas exchange, plant defense response, cell death, and plant growth and development. They can act as oxidizing agents on protein cysteine residues and in this way they can modify the activity or function of proteins involved in plant metabolism. Moreover, ROS and NO can regulate gene expression at different levels. On one side, they can initiate signaling cascades or modify proteins involved in signal transduction pathways. On the other side, redox-sensitive transcription factors can also be targets of these molecules. We are focusing our research on the function of ROS and NO in plant stress signaling and investigate how these redox molecules regulate chromatin modulation, gene transcription and/or general nuclear metabolism.
